Jim trained as an architect back when freehand sketching was an integral part of the curriculum. He now guest lectures in the Architecture Program at Iowa State and teaches sketching at Marine Mills Craft School. Over the years, Jim discovered that drawing is a meditative way to understand shade and shadow, reflections, landscapes, streetscapes, sky and skyline. In 2020, Jim’s book Capture the Moment was published by ORO Editions and shares the joy and relaxation of sketching your surroundings. With suggestions for tools and techniques, Jim’s instructions make drawing more accessible and less intimidating. When he isn’t traveling, Jim works as arborist, caring for the trees on his 18-acre farmstead in Minnesota.
Sketching takes just two things—courage and perseverance. If you like it, then it’s a good sketch.
